HOWARD HODGKIN
Howard Hodgkin (1932-2017) was a British painter known for his abstractions that were deeply embedded in the tradition of representational easel painting. Constructing pictorial space using expressive brush marks and lush colors, his works were almost always painted on the backs of old picture frames-creating a tension between the painted frame and its ground. While his early compositions have a collaged geometric flatness, Hodgkin's later work, including etchings and aquatint prints, has increasingly incorporated more complex fluid patterning, reminiscent of Henri Matisse's The Moroccans (1916), Édouard Vuillard's interiors, and Paturi miniatures from India, of which he was an avid collector.
