In a newspaper article published in 1874, the American author Louisa May Alcott wrote punishingly about the Irish servants she chose not to employ, proudly claiming that she’d fired her own Irish maid because of “the faults of her race”. In not one, but two instances, Alcott referred to the Irish as “the foreign incapables”.
